Who is an Employee?

Under the National Housing Trust Act an Employee is someone:

  • At/over the age of 18 and under the age of retirement.
  • Gainfully occupied in employment.
  • Not earning less than the minimum wage.

How are payments made?

As an Employee your Employer should make your NHT contributions payments monthly on your behalf via Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ). Your employer should make payments on your behalf within 14 days of the end of the month.

This also applies if you have more than one employer. 

Please note that as a contributor you MUST inform us of any change in your employment status as soon as possible.

What are the benefits of contributing?

There are several benefits that employees can reap by being compliant with the NHT. These include:

  • Low interest rate loans to build, buy or improve a house or land.
  • A refund in the 8th year after each contribution was made.
  • Obtain a clearance letter or tax compliance certificate.

What are the penalties for not contributing?

Failure to make contribution payments will make persons:

  • Ineligible to apply for an housing benefits such as loans and grants.
  • Ineligible to apply for contribution refunds.

Clearance Letter/ Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC)

To obtain a Clearance Letter employed persons should visit one of our locations and speak with a Compliance Officer and submit the following:

  • TRN Card*
  • NIS Card**
  • Last three (3) pay slips or current job letter
  • Valid Identification (Driver's license, National/Voter's ID, Passport)
  • Purpose of clearance (E.g. Documents for whatever is being imported or Contract/Tender information)


* Where the NIS card is not available, if pay slips carry this number we will use in lieu. The NIS Clearance Letter can also be used.
** Where the TRN card is not available, if a Driver’s license is presented, we will use in lieu.

If the company is still in existence, verification of contributions can be had from the employer. If the company is no longer in existence and the contributions have not been remitted, those contributions would not contribute towards determining your points.
